How do I calculate toilets per person?

There are no definite calculations in which you input numbers and have it spit out a magic number; each wedding is different and the ideal number depends on the following factors:

  • How many guests will be attending?
  • How many female/male guests?
  • Are there any existing toilet facilities?
  • Will your guests be eating/drinking?
  • How long is your wedding?
  • Will there be alcohol?
  • Are there any guests with accessibility requirements?

How Many Guests?

As a general rule of thumb, the more guests you have, the more toilets you should hire to reduce the wait queue and time. If budget allows, you should allow one VIP toilet for every 50 guests, with additional generosity towards female guests.

It’s a problem no one has ever solved, but the lines for the ladies always seems to be longer than the gents, so it’s recommended that you offer an additional unit wherever possible.

Wedding Length

The duration and location of your wedding is also important factors which plays into the calculation; will you be requiring toilets for the ceremony and reception, or reception only?

If some of your guests are spending 8+ hours at the same venue, chances are you will need to make sure there are enough toilet facilities.

On the other hand, if you choose an indoor ceremony but an outdoor reception, you may be able to get away with hiring less units as some guests will only be staying for shorter period of time.

Where will the food and drink be served?

Amongst the most important part of organising a wedding is to ensure that there are quality food and drinks for your guests; and what happens after consuming food and drink is only simple biology.

Depending on your chosen venue and the schedule of the day, there may be existing bathroom facilities which can help you reduce the costs of hiring portable toilets.

Alcohol Consumption

Alcohol is one of the most important factors to consider when deciding how many units you may need; not only is itself a liquid which helps to fill the bladder, it’s also a diuretic which means that it increases urine production, meaning more trips to the loo.

When alcohol is involved, it’s recommended that you add at least one additional unit to reduce potential waiting times and any unwanted accidents.

Accessibility requirements

Just as there are public toilets for those with accessibility requirements, there are also portable VIP toilets built with accessibility in mind. This isn’t exclusively for wheelchair users; also consider the elderly who may require specific bathroom aids and those with specific conditions.

Taking into consideration everything we’ve discussed above; we’ll now apply it to the following scenario:

The wedding reception will last 6 hours, with 100 guests attending, equally split in 50% male and female, with 2 wheelchair user and several elderly relatives.

Around half of the guests will have already eaten at wedding breakfast, but small nibbles will be served throughout the reception.

There will be a mobile bar at the wedding, serving a range of special cocktails and other popular drinks such as craft and draught beers.

Based on the generic rule of thumb, you should hire 1 unit for every 50 guests, plus an additional unit for female guests. This means that we are currently at 3 units. As there are guests with accessibility requirements, you will also need to hire an accessible unit. As alcohol will also be served, we’d recommend an additional unit for each gender, bringing the total up to 6 units.

Do I need posh portable toilets?

You will also need to consider other factors such as your budget, the type of units you want to hire and the location and size of your venue. In this instance, if your venue cannot accommodate 6 units, you may need to revisit the numbers.

For the improved comfort of your guests, luxury toilets are a popular choice. Your wedding event will be much more enjoyable for those attending if you increase the budget to hire these posh portable toilets.
